What the printer asks for, item by item
A print buyer and a designer usually disagree about what finished means. The printer settles it: there is a short list of things their equipment needs, and anything missing from that list either stops the job or prints a mistake at full volume. The matrix below is that list — what to supply for each item, and the check that tells you it is genuinely supplied.
Most of this is mechanical and checkable, which is why AI-assisted preparation is cheap and dependable for it. The judgement calls are the ones it cannot make for you: whether a fold lands where the eye expects it, whether a colour survives the material, and whether the words on the pack are the words that were approved.
Dieline
Supply: the converter's current approved dieline, with flat dimensions, material and thickness, grain or flute direction, and the allowances for folding and gluing. Acceptance test: fold a full-size printout and check that every panel lands where the drawing says it will.
Bleed and safety
Supply: artwork extended to the converter's own bleed, and a safety margin that keeps copy away from creases and cuts. Acceptance test: measure the distance from the nearest crease to the smallest piece of text on the pack.
Colour separations
Supply: a named separation list, spot inks identified by reference, and a stated rule for what must not shift. Acceptance test: open the separations one at a time and confirm nothing is sitting on the wrong plate.

The dieline is a contract, not a drawing you can redraw
Everything else is measured from the dieline, so a wrong one invalidates the whole file. Get it from the converter who will actually produce the pack, in their current revision, and treat it as read-only geometry. A dieline rebuilt by eye from a photograph or from a competitor's pack is the most expensive shortcut in this work: the artwork will look correct and fold wrong.
It has to carry more than outlines. The material and its thickness change how a fold behaves. The grain or flute direction decides which way a board wants to bend, and a panel that sat flat in the file can bow once it is on a shelf. Assembly allowances decide how much of the layout survives being folded and glued at all. None of that is visible in a drawing that shows only cut lines.
Bleed and safety are the converter's numbers, not a default
Bleed is not a fixed three millimetres. It follows from how this pack is cut and folded, and the converter states it. A generic default is the ordinary cause of a white sliver along one edge of an otherwise clean run. Ask for the number before artwork starts, and build to it rather than scaling the design afterwards to cover a gap.
Safety matters more than bleed, because its failures are invisible on screen. Copy sitting close to a crease stops being readable once the board is folded, and a date printed across a fold cannot be read by the person who needs to read it. Keep text away from creases, cut edges, glue areas and any panel the pack hides when it is closed.
Colour is a cost decision before it is a taste decision
How many inks the pack uses is a per-unit cost, so colour belongs in the conversation early rather than at the end. One flat colour chosen deliberately prints the same at every supplier. A gradient, or a brand colour built from process inks, does not, and the difference is visible the moment two production runs stand next to each other on a shelf.

That is a concept project rather than a client engagement, and it is cited here only because the decision it records is exactly what this section is about.
The material decides the rest. The same ink reads differently on uncoated board, on a metallised film and under a matte laminate, and a white layer behind the artwork is what makes anything legible on transparent packaging. If the brand colour cannot hold on the material you are actually printing, that belongs in the brand guidelines as a stated alternative, not as a discovery made at the press.
Codes and mandatory copy are the parts nobody may redraw
A barcode is a measurement rather than a graphic. It has a permitted size range, a quiet zone that has to stay empty, and a contrast requirement between bars and background; GS1 publishes the specifications retailers check against. Shrinking a code to fit a layout, or placing it across a fold or a tight curve, produces a pack that will not scan at the till.
Mandatory copy has the same status for a different reason. Whatever your market requires on the pack — contents, origin, warnings, contact details, language versions — is approved wording, not a design element to be tidied up. Set it in its final form at a legible size, and have the person accountable for it sign the proof rather than the layout.
One export the printer's equipment can actually run
The handoff is a single print-ready PDF per item, not a folder of working files and an optimistic note. Every font travels inside the file or as outlines. Every image holds up at the size it will actually print rather than the size it was placed at. Separation names match what the press expects, and the overprint and trapping behaviour follows whatever this printer specified. The Ghent Workgroup publishes print and packaging specifications that describe what a clean file looks like in practice.
Treat the printer's preflight as the gate. A report with no errors is the pass; a report with warnings you chose to ignore is a decision you have taken on the printer's behalf. Hand over the editable source alongside the PDF regardless — the next revision starts from the source, and a PDF is a poor place to make a change.
A proof answers a question no screen can
Two different things are both called a proof. A digital proof checks content: the right words, the right code, the layout that was approved. A physical proof printed on the real material checks colour and finish, and it is the only one that can tell you the brand colour survived the substrate. Decide which of them is deciding before anybody approves anything.
A render is not a proof. A visualisation is genuinely useful for agreeing shape and shelf presence, and it is worth making, but it predicts the result instead of measuring it. Keep the signed proof with the file it approved, dated, so that an argument six months later is settled by a document rather than by memory.
Rights, controlled data and what the supplier keeps
Packaging licences fail differently from web licences. A typeface licence may cover a website and exclude production artwork; a stock photograph may be licensed for advertising but not for packaging, which is a separate and usually dearer grant. Check every external asset against the use you are actually making of it, and record the owner, the territories and the expiry where the file lives.
Ask what the converter keeps and what they are allowed to change. Prepress routinely adjusts trapping and adds press marks, and you want to know which edits are theirs so that a second supplier can make the same pack. Settle who owns the dieline, who may reuse the artwork, and whether the file may travel to another converter — before the day you need it to.
Archive the file that ran, and name the reprint owner
The deliverable worth keeping is not the file exported when the design was signed off. It is the PDF that went on press, with its separations, its signed proof and the date. Those two diverge more often than anyone expects, because the last change is usually made under time pressure and rarely finds its way back into the tidy folder.
Name who may authorise a reprint, and who has to be told when the pack changes — a new size, a new market, a new claim on the front. A reprint that starts from the archive costs press time and nothing else. One that starts from a search through old email costs a fresh proof cycle, and sometimes a pallet of packaging nobody can sell.
