Answer in brief

The final essay is a pass-or-fail written test that Russian school leavers must pass before the Unified State Exam. In the 2026/27 school year the main date is 2 December 2026, with extra dates in February and April 2027. Topics come from FIPI's closed bank of more than 2,000 topics; the essay needs at least 250 words, must be written independently and is judged on five criteria.

Evidence cutoff: 9 sources
The final essay is graded only as pass or fail, and a pass is one of the conditions of admission to the Unified State Exam.
The main date in the 2026/27 school year is Wednesday 2 December 2026; the extra dates fall in February and April 2027.
Six topics are drawn on the day from FIPI's closed bank of more than 2,000, two from each of its three sections.

An essay that opens the door to the Unified State Exam

Anyone searching for final essay Russia 2026 is usually an eleventh-grader or a parent asking what happens in December. The final essay, итоговое сочинение in Russian, is a written test that school leavers must pass before they are admitted to the Unified State Exam, which ends school and opens university. FIPI, the federal institute that develops the exam materials, says in its 2026/27 guidance that the essay has existed since the 2014/15 school year. It was introduced under presidential instructions No. 2699 of 17 November 2013.

The legal basis is the procedure for state final certification, approved by joint order No. 233/552 of the Ministry of Education and Rosobrnadzor of 4 April 2023 and published by ConsultantPlus in its version of 12 April 2024. Paragraph 8 makes a pass for the essay a condition of admission to the exams, and paragraph 29 says the result is only «зачёт» or «незачёт», pass or fail. Under paragraph 22, pupils with disabilities and some other groups may write a summary of a text, the изложение, instead. Paragraph 24 lets other candidates, such as graduates of earlier years, write the essay if they wish.

The December date and the two extra days in 2027

The calendar comes from the procedure, not from a yearly announcement. Paragraph 22 puts the main date on the first Wednesday of December of the final year, which in the 2026/27 school year is 2 December 2026. Paragraph 30 adds two extra dates: the first Wednesday of February and the second Wednesday of April. Rosobrnadzor's recommendations for 2025/26 say the essay starts at 10:00 local time.

On 12 October 2026 Rosobrnadzor's website republished a notice from the education ministry of the Altai Republic with exact dates: 2 December 2026, 3 February 2027 and 7 April 2027. The application deadlines in it are 18 November 2026, 20 January 2027 and 24 March 2027. They follow paragraph 23 of the procedure, which requires an application at least two weeks before the essay. Pupils apply at their own school.

One date deserves a second look. By the calendar, the second Wednesday of April 2027 is 14 April, while the Altai notice names 7 April, the first Wednesday of the month. Neither document explains the difference, so the April date is the one to confirm with the school or the regional ministry.

A closed bank of more than 2,000 essay topics

FIPI's page on the final essay says that in 2026/27 the sets of topics are drawn from a closed bank. It has been supplemented with new historical topics about events, processes and people of Russian history, approved in approach by the Ministry of Education's council on the final essay. The sets combine topics used in earlier years with topics written in 2026. FIPI's description of the structure puts the bank at more than 2,000 topics.

The bank has three sections. The first, spiritual and moral guidelines, covers the inner world, attitudes to others, knowing oneself, and freedom and its limits. The second, family, society and the fatherland, covers family traditions, the person in society and civic position. The third, nature and culture, covers nature, science, art and language. Every set holds six topics, two from each section, in that order.

FIPI has published examples of the new historical wording, prepared under council protocols of 28 November 2024 and 19 November 2025. One asks what lessons the nation's history can teach; another quotes the historian Vasily Klyuchevsky on why a good citizen must be a little of a historian. Paragraph 26 says the sets are provided on the day, and Rosobrnadzor's recommendations say they become public 15 minutes before the start, region by region, on topic.rustest.ru.

Two requirements and five criteria for the essay

FIPI's assessment criteria, unchanged for 2026/27, open with two requirements that decide whether the essay is graded at all. The recommended length is from 350 words with no maximum, but an essay of fewer than 250 words fails as a whole. Every word counts, prepositions included; initials with a surname are one word, and numbers written as digits are not counted. The second requirement is independence: copying from any source or reproducing another text from memory means a fail without further checking.

Quoting is allowed with a reference to the source in any form, as long as the quotations are not longer than the student's own text. An essay that meets both requirements is judged on five criteria: relevance to the topic, argument with literary material, composition and logic, quality of written language, and literacy. The first two are decisive. A pass needs criteria 1 and 2 plus at least one of the other three.

Criterion 1 fails only when the essay does not answer the question or has no visible aim. Criterion 2 fails when there is no argument, no literary support, a seriously distorted book or one that is only mentioned. Literacy fails at more than five grammar, spelling and punctuation errors per 100 words on average, and one literary text is enough.

Three hours fifty-five minutes, a pen and a dictionary

Rosobrnadzor's recommendations for 2025/26 give the writing time as 3 hours 55 minutes, or 235 minutes, not counting the briefing; FIPI says the procedure stays the same in 2026/27. Paragraph 27 lists what may lie on the desk: a black gel or capillary pen, an identity document, a spelling dictionary issued on site, draft paper, medicines, a snack and water. Paragraph 28 bans phones, cameras, reference materials, notes, one's own dictionaries and literary texts. A student who breaks the ban is removed.

Pupils with disabilities get more time. The recommendations add 1.5 hours for pupils with a recommendation from a psychological, medical and pedagogical commission and for those with a disability certificate. At their own wish and on medical grounds, they may take the essay orally, and FIPI's criteria then leave out literacy. Draft sheets are handed out on the day, but the recommendations warn that drafts are not checked.

Results, retakes and the essay at university admission

Paragraph 29 sets the checking deadline: no later than twelve calendar days after the December or February date and eight days after the April one. The Altai notice tells candidates to expect results no earlier than 14 calendar days after the essay, at school or in the «Результаты ЕГЭ» service at check.ege.edu.ru. As admission to the exams, a pass is valid indefinitely, according to Rosobrnadzor's recommendations.

Under paragraph 30, the extra dates are open to those who failed, those removed for breaking the rules, and those who missed the essay or could not finish it for a documented good reason such as illness. Rosobrnadzor's recommendations allow no more than two attempts after a fail in the current school year. After a second fail, a student may ask in writing for a check by the commission of another school.

For universities the essay can be worth points. FIPI's 2026/27 guidance says that, by the university's own decision, it may count as an individual achievement, with up to 10 points added to the applicant's exam results. Whether a given university does so is set by its admission rules, so applicants check each one.

Why essays fail, in FIPI's own words

FIPI's 2026/27 guidance lists the typical weaknesses its graders see. One is writing to the minimum: a student reaches about 250 words, then cuts the reasoning short and jumps to the conclusion. Another is building the essay from prepared clichés or retelling ready material while simplifying the topic. The guidance also names artificial padding: piling up examples, citing several books without reason, repeating the thesis in other words, and detailed retelling of plots.

Misreading the topic is the other trap. FIPI gives the example of a student asked which life impressions help a person believe in goodness who wrote about finding happiness instead. With historical topics, it warns against cutting off part of the topic or narrowing it without reason. Its advice is plain: despite an industry of templates and half-finished essays, the best essay is still independent reasoning based on the student's own reading. The 2026/27 sample set shows the format, with questions such as who can be called a happy person.

What is still open about the essay on 19 October 2026

Three things are not settled. The topics stay unknown until the morning of 2 December 2026. The April date, 7 or 14 April 2027, has to be confirmed region by region. And this year's organisational recommendations are not yet listed on FIPI's page as of 19 October 2026; last year Rosobrnadzor sent them with a letter of 24 October 2025, so a new set may follow if the pattern repeats.

The nearest firm deadline is the application, 18 November 2026 for the December date in the Altai notice. In the Altai Republic, graduates of earlier years register with the municipal education authority or the regional processing centre, so they should read their own regional ministry's page rather than wait to be called. The pages to watch are FIPI's section at fipi.ru, Rosobrnadzor's news at obrnadzor.gov.ru and the regional ministry's page; if a new order or letter changes a rule, the official text takes precedence.

Practical checklist

  • Put Wednesday 2 December 2026 in the calendar and ask the school for its application deadline.
  • Read FIPI's structure of the topic bank and choose two or three well-known books for each section.
  • Write timed practice essays of 350 words or more in 3 hours 55 minutes, with only a spelling dictionary.
  • Check every practice essay against the two requirements and the five criteria in FIPI's document.
  • Confirm the April 2027 retake date and each university's rule on extra points before relying on them.

Questions and answers

Can a student sit the Unified State Exam without passing the final essay?

Not under the current procedure. A pass for the final essay, or for the summary that some pupils may write instead, is listed among the conditions of admission to the state exams, next to having no academic debts and a completed curriculum.

Are the final essay topics for 2 December 2026 known in advance?

No. FIPI publishes the structure of its bank, comments on the sections, a sample set and examples of the new historical wording. The actual set of six topics is released on the day of the essay, a quarter of an hour before the start in each region.

How long must the final essay be in the 2026/27 school year?

FIPI recommends 350 words or more and sets no upper limit. The hard floor is 250 words: a shorter essay fails without being read against the criteria. Function words count, while numbers written as digits do not.

What happens if a student is ill on the day of the final essay?

A student who misses the essay or has to leave early for a documented good reason, such as illness, is admitted to one of the extra dates in February or April 2027. The school records an early finish in a formal act, and the decision on readmission follows from it.

Does an essay written in an earlier school year still count?

As admission to the state exams, a pass does not expire, according to Rosobrnadzor's recommendations. Graduates of earlier years may write the essay again, even if they already have one, for example to use it at university admission, where each university applies its own rules.
