Answer in brief
Set up Yandex Direct in this order: a separate Yandex login and Direct account, a Yandex Metrica counter with goals, a campaign type, a strategy with a weekly budget, narrow targeting, ads, moderation and the advertiser data for ad marking. Then read the search queries report for two weeks and add negative keywords before you change anything else.
Setting up Yandex Direct in nine steps, in this order
To set up Yandex Direct yourself, go through nine steps in a fixed order: a separate Yandex login and a Direct account, a Yandex Metrica counter with goals, the campaign type, the strategy and weekly budget, targeting, the ads, moderation, the advertiser data for ad marking, and two weeks of reading the statistics. Most owners who ask how to set up Yandex Direct lose their first budget around the ad, not in the ad itself.
Start with the account. Yandex Direct’s help recommends a separate login for advertising, not the personal one used for Yandex Mail or Yandex Disk, because ads cannot later be moved to another login. You choose a country and, for some countries, a currency; the help says all payments are then made only in that currency. Impressions begin after the ads pass moderation and the placement is paid.
A landing page and Yandex Metrica goals before the first campaign
An ad is a promise, and the page behind it has to keep it. Yandex Direct’s moderation rules require the landing page to match the ad text, open in all browsers, carry no “site under construction” stub or pop-up windows, and show any discount the ad mentions. A page that passes moderation but answers another question still wastes money, because people click and leave.
Then comes measurement. Direct’s help describes the Yandex Metrica counter as code placed on the pages of the site, and Metrica’s own help defines a goal as a visitor action the owner is interested in: a page view, a button click, a form sent, a payment. Direct’s page on target actions says the system adjusts bids to your tasks when you choose Metrica goals in the strategy, up to 30 of them. Without goals a strategy can only chase clicks.
Yandex Direct campaign types as the help describes them in October 2026
The help currently offers three ways in. Simple Start is meant for entrepreneurs with little or no experience in Direct: you give a link, or fill in a questionnaire if there is no site, and Direct writes the ads and picks the settings; the help says it works for accounts from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan and runs for at least seven days. The Campaign Wizard sits in the middle. It suggests settings, thematic words, texts, pictures and budget options at each step, and runs on search and the Advertising Network together.
The Unified Performance Campaign, found in expert mode, is described as a tool for specialists. Its settings sit on three levels: the campaign holds placements, strategy, dates and schedule; the group holds geography, autotargeting, keywords and audiences; the ad holds texts, images, sitelinks and callouts. It can run on search only, which shows which queries bring clicks. And, as the Wizard’s help warns, a launched campaign cannot be deleted, only archived.
Choosing a Yandex Direct strategy: clicks, conversions and the weekly budget
Direct’s help defines a strategy as a set of settings that serves the campaign’s task, and it recommends automatic bidding because algorithms adjust a campaign far more often than a person can. One strategy covers all the ads in a campaign. For the Unified Performance Campaign the help lists Maximum conversions, Maximum clicks, Maximum clicks with manual bids and Maximum profit.
The main choice is what you pay for. With payment for conversions you pay for each target action within 21 days of the click, and the help asks for a weekly budget of at least ten times the price per conversion. With payment for clicks every click is charged. Paying for conversions shields a small budget from empty visits but needs goals that people actually reach.
The weekly budget runs from Monday to Sunday, and in strategies that charge for clicks one day cannot take more than 35% of it. A change in the middle of the week restarts the spending count, so the help advises changing the budget at the start of a week and rarely. A strategy usually needs several weeks to prove itself, and a new strategy, payment model, goal set or placement restarts its learning, as does a pause of more than seven days.
Keywords, autotargeting and negative phrases for a narrow first campaign
Keywords decide who sees the ad. Direct’s help gives the example “tours to Mars”: the ad can show for “cheap tours to Mars” but not for “tours to the Moon”. A group holds up to 200 phrases of no more than seven words each. Wordstat, Yandex’s query statistics service, shows how often a phrase is searched; the help’s example is “repair”, too vague for a renovation crew, which should use “apartment repair”. Negative words close the remaining doors: a phrase about trips to the Moon stops showing for books on the subject once “book” is added as a negative word.
Autotargeting works without keywords: it reads the ad and the landing page, decides whether they answer a query and sorts queries into target, narrow, broad, alternative and related ones. The help says it runs alongside keywords with equal priority and warns that switching categories off reduces reach, so drop one only when the statistics show it brings the wrong people. Geotargeting, set for each ad group, reaches people who live in a region, are there now or are interested in it. A schedule needs at least eight hours a week, and the help advises against cutting it to office hours.
Writing Yandex Direct ads that pass moderation the first time
Ad texts have hard limits. Direct’s help allows a title of up to 56 characters including spaces, with no word over 22, and a text of up to 81 characters and 15 punctuation marks, with no word over 23. Up to eight sitelinks with 30 characters of text lead to other pages, and a click on one is paid as one click on the ad. Callouts, short lines about your advantages, take up to 25 characters each.
Every ad is moderated. The help says texts, keywords and links are usually checked within a few hours, longer in campaigns with many ads, and the result is sent by email. The rules are plain: no typos, no words in capitals except accepted abbreviations and brands, no phone numbers or email addresses in the text, and superlatives only with an independent conclusion published on the landing page. Ads aimed at Russia must be written in Russian or fully duplicated in it.
Ad marking under article 18.1 of the Russian Advertising Law
Article 18.1 of Federal Law No. 38-FZ “On Advertising”, in the text published by ConsultantPlus, says that an online ad must carry the label “реклама” (advertising) and point to the advertiser or to a site with information about them. An ad may run only after an advertising data operator has assigned it an identifier. Advertisers pass information about their ads to the federal supervisory authority through such an operator.
Yandex Direct’s marking page says that since 1 September 2022 all online ads shown in Russia are marked, and that Yandex, acting as an advertising data operator, issues a token for each creative before it runs in Direct and adds the label. An advertiser running their own ads fills in the advertiser data, for a Russian individual the full name, phone and taxpayer number (INN), and keeps “I am the end advertiser” switched on; Yandex does the rest. This is a summary, not legal advice: check your own case with a lawyer.
The first two weeks in Yandex Direct, and when to hand the account over
In the first two weeks, read before you change. The search queries report lists the queries your ads were shown for and what triggered each impression; the help says it covers the last 180 days and lets you send irrelevant queries to negative phrases straight from the report. Next to it, watch conversions and cost per goal. A goal that is never reached often points to the page rather than the bid.
Beginner losses tend to repeat: a personal login that cannot be handed over, a counter without goals, broad one-word phrases with no negatives, a budget changed mid-week, a schedule cut to office hours, an ad that promises what the page does not show. Constant tinkering is another one, since the help notes that frequent restarts make a good forecast harder to build.
Prepare the offer in one sentence, a page that keeps the ad’s promise, Metrica access with at least one goal, the advertiser data and a weekly budget you can hold for several weeks. Doing it yourself makes sense when the offer is simple and you have an hour a week for the queries report. When that hour is missing, or the first weeks went on the wrong queries, setup and management can be ordered. VITON13 Studio does this work, and its guide to Yandex Direct costs explains how a budget is formed.
Practical checklist
- Create a separate Yandex login for advertising instead of using your personal mail account.
- Install the Yandex Metrica counter and create at least one goal for a request or a call.
- Start with one campaign, a short list of specific phrases and a list of negative keywords.
- Fill in the advertiser data for ad marking in your Direct account before the first launch.
- Open the search queries report twice a week and move irrelevant queries to negative phrases.
Questions and answers
Can I set up Yandex Direct without an agency or a specialist?
Yes. Yandex built Simple Start and the Campaign Wizard for owners with little experience: you give a link or a short description, and Direct suggests texts, settings and a budget. What it cannot do for you is choose the right goal, prepare the page and read the search queries afterwards.
How long does Yandex Direct moderation take for new ads?
According to Yandex Direct’s help, texts, keywords and links are usually moderated within a few hours, and campaigns with many ads take longer. The result comes by email and in the campaign status; impressions start once the ads are approved and the placement is paid.
Do I need a website to advertise in Yandex Direct?
Not always. The Campaign Wizard has a scenario for promotion without a site, and Simple Start accepts a questionnaire instead of a link. Metrica goals, however, are set on a site, so without one the automatic strategies get fewer signals to learn from.
Does Yandex mark my Direct ads automatically under the advertising law?
Partly. Yandex’s help says that for ads placed through Direct it issues a token for each creative and adds the advertising label. The advertiser still enters their own details in the account, and agencies or intermediaries have additional steps and monthly reports to file.
When can I judge whether a new Yandex Direct campaign works?
Not after two days. The help on strategies says an automatic strategy usually needs several weeks, and that switching the strategy, the payment model or the placement starts its learning again. Two weeks are enough to clean up the queries; the verdict comes later.
